Thousand Oaks victims call for gun control

Once again,a community came together to mourn for those who were killed and those who survived. The shooting at the board line bar in Thousand Oaks late Wednesday. In all 12 people killed, many at the bar that night have survived a deadly shooting in US history just last year at the Route 97 Harvest Musical Festival in Las Vegas.Tel Orfonos,a 27-year-old Navy veteran, was one of those who escaped the gunman in Las Vegas. This time,he didn’t make it.

“I don’t want prayers.I don’t want thoughts,I want gun control and I hope to give nobody else more prayers.I want gun control. No more guns .”

Dani Merrill survived the shooting in Las Vegas and she injured her knee while escaping the Boardline.
Dani Merrill
The debate over gun control weighs heavy on her while she was alive but others she knew was not.
“You know,I had a meltdown in the car after, when we got in the car on our way home,I had a panic attack.I can’t do this again.I don’t want to do this again. No one should have to do it once, let alone twice.I think it needs to be harder to obtain a weapon.I don’t think we should be able to.But I think there should be more rules in place that you need to go through in order to obtain one. ”

Merrill says many local country music fans formed support groups in a week after the Vegas shooting. They often gathered at the Borderline, given all that had happened,a place that they thought was safe.

“It happened in Vegas,it(Vegas) is my home. But now it’s even harder. This is your home.”

Home for people like Noel Sparks,a 21-yeat-old church volunteer or Elena,an 18-year-old student,the youngest victim,or Dan,a 33-year-old marine veteran,all gone.

Despite so much grief,Merrill says eventually she will go back to the Borderline.

“I’m not going to let them win.I’m not going to let them ruin something I love.I can’t do that.”
