发言题目:Translation: A Type of Cognitive Construal
发言摘要:There are various ideas of what translation is. For example, translation is taken as a process, i.e. the act of producing a translation, or as a product, i.e. a translated text. George Steiner (2004: 1) even thinks that “Every language act is a translation”. The present paper, however, proposes that translation is a type of cognitive construal, and the process of translation is a process of cognitive construal operation. Cognitive construal is the ability of the translator to construe the source language and use different linguistic structures of the target language to represent it in text. This paper, within the framework of the construal theory, intends to explicate how to understand translation as a type of cognitive construal, and what is the purpose and principle of translation. The objective of translation is to maintain the cognitive topology between the source language and the target language. And the principle of translation is the invariance hypothesis which means that all the elements or factors in the source language should be mapped to the target language in the process of cognitive construal operation.
