These industries could be Amazon’s next targets

Jason Goldberg: Five years from now, Amazon is possibly the first $2 trillion cap company. And they’re much bigger part of the consumers’ life than they even are today. So we’re starting to see them shift from purely a products-based company to a services company. And part of the reason you see that is because they have this first world problem. They are such a big company now that they have to find huge markets to conquer. So you can imagine they’re serving you lunch at work. They’re managing your healthcare, doing your furniture. They’re your style advisors. And they’re just find all kinds opportunities to monetize that, and usually very successfully.

Brad Stone: I think Amazon is going to, at some point, turn around and offer its logistics prowess and its last mile capability to other companies. So it wouldn’t surprise me if, in five years we’re thinking of Amazon is a little bit more like a UPS or a FedEx, where someone who doesn’t do any business on Amazon but once to get a package from point A to point B, hire Amazon to go fly across the country or fly it halfway across the country, train it another third and then deliver it the last mile with a car or a van.

Arun Sundararajan: in five years, I think Amazon will be the most valuable company in the world, more valuable than Google, more valuable than Facebook, more valuable than Apple.

Amazon is buying into the heart of the health care industry in shaking up the prescription drug machine.

Arun Sundararajan: I also think there’ll be a lot of expansion into health care and insurance. In part because healthcare is just so replete with inefficiency right now. And Amazon is like the bastion of efficiency.

Stacy Mitchell: Pharmacy chains are a bit bloated. You’ve got this middle management companies, PBMs like CVS Health that control a lot of that market. I think with purchase of Pillpack, Amazon is kind of working at that area and say this is a way into healthcare and into a very large and growing market.

Jason Goldberg: so think about how been successful in pharmacy might have a positive impact on their core retail business.
Today, the pharmacy businesses are primarily retail pharmacies. They’re folks like Walgreens and CVS. But the bulk of traffic to Walgreens and CVS are customers that are coming in to pick up the prescription. So if Amazon were disrupt that traffic by becoming the dominant prescription provider at home, overnight, Walgreens and CVS lose 60% of their foot traffic which essentially means they’re not viable businesses. And suddenly this competitor for all of these consumer package goods goes away and Amazon is going to be the best position to capture that incremental demand.
