Host: Robin Li, welcome to Talk Asia. Thank you so much for joining us.

Robin Li: Thank you.

Host: Baidu is China’s largest, most successful search engine. You’re worth billions of dollars. Life must be good for you.
主持人:百度是中国最大、最成功的搜索引擎。你有几十亿美元的身家，生活一定过得不错吧。

Robin Li: Life is good, but not because I’m worth so much. It’s because it’s an exciting time to be in China and in the Internet space. Especially in the age of artificial intelligence. There are lots of innovations coming out every day. So, the change will impact every one, every industry. So, I’m excited about that we’re part of it. And we are leading some of those innovations.
李彦宏: 生活确实不错，但是并不是因为我身家有多少钱，而是因为当下我所经历的这个令人兴奋的时代。在中国、在互联网行业，尤其是在人工智能的时代，每天都有大量的创新涌现。因此，这种变化将影响到每一个行业。我很高兴我们是其中一员，并且我们正在引领这些创新。

Host: Well to your point there, when you say leading, what sets Baidu apart from some of its competitors? The Tencent of the world, the Alibaba’s of the world. What makes Baidu different?
主持人:说到这里，当你说处于领先的时候，是什么让百度从它的竞争对手——腾讯，阿里巴巴——中脱颖而出的呢?是什么使得百度与众不同呢?

Robin Li: I think we are more technology driven company than anyone else here in China. Take AI as an example. I think deep learning is now known to everyone. But we started to use deep learning back in about 2012. AI was not that sexy because people thought there is no real use case for AI. But over the past five years, I think we see a lot of use cases. That’s why we started to aggressively invest in AI, especially deep learning. And now we have this called Brain SSR AI platform, with capabilities like image recognition, voice recognition, natural language understanding, and user profiling.
李彦宏:我认为我们比中国其他任何公司都更注重技术。以AI为例，据我所知，现在每个人都知道了深度学习（计算机专业术语）。但是我们早在2012年就开始使用深度学习。那个时候，人工智能并不是很有吸引力，因为人们认为它缺乏真正的使用案例。但是在过去的五年里，我们看到了很多使用案例。这就是为什么我们开始积极投资人工智能，特别是深度学习这一板块。现在我们有了一个叫做脑SSR AI的平台，具有图像识别、语音识别、自然语言理解和用户分析等功能

Host: Essentially, you’re making a bet on something that hasn’t happen yet and you’re putting your money where your mouth is. Walk us through that decision-making process. How do you decide to completely do something different?
主持人:从本质上来说，你是在对尚未发生的事情下赌注，并付之行动。给我们谈谈这个决策过程。这次你尝试了全新的领域，你是如何做出这个决定的？

Robin Li: Yeah, I think, the first of all, I’m an entrepreneur. So, I’m born to take risk. I consider that we have a better understanding on technology than anyone else. So, if there’s something happens in the technology space, we should be the first one to take that risk. We should be the first one to see that trend. It’s just like instinct. It’s ours. Let’s go. Let’s go for it.
是的，我想，首先，我是一个企业家。所以我生来就是要冒险的。我认为我们比任何人都更了解技术。因此，一旦在技术领域有什么风吹草动，我们应该是第一个承担这种风险、第一个看到这种趋势的人。这就像一种本能。这是我们的（机会）。我们行动吧。我们去努力争取吧。

Host: What is your end game with AI? I mean is it—will it become the profit generator for your company moving forward?
主持人:你和AI的终极游戏是什么? 我的意思是，它会成为你们公司未来的营利来源吗?

Robin Li: Yeah, I think it’s actually a natural evolution. We started with the search engine. But if you think about the innovations over the past 15 to 20 years in computer science, almost all the innovations are related to search. Now today, we see that, AI is the new electricity, which means it’s going to be the infrastructure. It’s going to change industry after industry. And we are at the center of that. We already invested in this for five or six years, very aggressively.
李彦宏: 是的，我认为这是一种自然进化。过去，我们从搜索引擎开始。但如果你回顾过去15到20年间计算机科学的创新，就会发现几乎所有的创新都与搜索有关。现在，我们看到，人工智能是新的动力，这意味着它将成为行业基础。它将改变一个又一个行业。而我们正处于这一切的中心。我们在这方面十分积极，已经投资了五六年。

Host: Walk us through 10, 15 years down the road. Where are we?
主持人:照这样发展下去，10年或者15年后，我们的生活会变得怎样?

Robin Li: Alright, I can imagine that when you—let’s say you go to an airport, you never ever need to show up with your ID because the system already recognized your face.
李彦宏:我可以想象（这样一个场景）：当你去机场的时候，系统会对你进行面部识别，你再也不需要出示身份证了。

Host: Less lines is not a bad thing either, right?
主持人:简化也不是坏事，对吧?

Robin Li: Right. For good purposes. In the past human history, human invented tools. But we become the slaves of tools. Whatever tool you buy, it comes with the user manual. It tells you how to use it. You buy a computer, it comes with a keyboard, and ABCD is not next to each other. You have to learn. Right. But going forward, I don’t think that’s necessary anymore. Humans don’t learn tools. Tools learn humans.
李彦宏:没错。前提是用来做好事。在过去，人类发明了工具，但我们成了工具的奴隶。无论你买什么工具，它都附有用户手册。它会告诉你如何使用工具。你买了一台电脑，它带有一个键盘，而且ABCD还没有挨在一起。你必须要学习（才会用）。但展望未来，我认为这已经没有必要了。人类不必学习工具，它们会越来越人性化。

Host: Every CEO has his or her ups and downs. Every company has their ups and downs. 2016, perhaps not the best year for Baidu. You learn a lot from your successes, of course. But what did you take away from the hard times?
主持人:每个CEO都有他或她的起起落落。每个公司都有巅峰与谷底。对百度来说，2016年可能不算是最好的一年。当然，你肯定从你的成功中学到了很多。但你从那段艰难岁月中又收获了什么?

Robin Li: Well, life is never easy for an entrepreneur. And you always need to take take on challenges, and that’s actually the part why I like to be an entrepreneur. There are days that people love you, and there are days people hate you. Right. And the thing that keeps me passionate about the things I’m doing is that every day when I wake up, I see I can still have a lot of things to do that make the world better. There are a lot of things that I’m yet to work on. There are things that I can change. I was not perfect. I was never perfect, I learned. I learned from my success. I learned from my failure. So, I’ve become better and better. Stronger and stronger. And I try to become a positive factor to the society.
李彦宏:对于企业家来说，生活向来不易。你总是需要接受挑战，这也是我喜欢做一个企业家的原因。有时人们爱你，有时人们恨你。每天当我醒来的时候，我发现我仍然可以做很多事情让世界变得更美好，这让我对正在做的事情充满激情。我还有很多事情要做。还有事情等着我去改变。我不是一个完美的人，从来都不是，但我会学习，从成功与失败中学习。所以我变得越来越好，越来越强大。我在努力为社会带来积极、正向的影响。
