How British spies made a cyber immune system

Every year, hacks are becoming bigger, more frequent and more sophisticated. Cybercrime is estimated to cost the world: a whopping $8 trillion by 2022. And cybersecurity experts are working day and night, not just to catch up, but to outsmart the hackers.

Here in Cambridge, a team of mathematicians and ex-British spies have built a cyberdefense strategy that’s based on our own human immune system. And now, it’s being used to defend some huge interests.

This is Drax Power Station. It’s the largest coal-powered plant in the UK. Imagine your job was to protect a company of this size and importance from hackers.

Martin Sloan: Drax Power Station generates approximately 7% of electricity for the country. So far a power station which uses data to manage everything that you see around here—each of the business units, each of the controllers. That’s data.

So Drax and other critical national infrastructure is constantly seeing breech attempts. But the company Darktrace, founded by those mathematicians and spies, is helping defend Drax Station in a new way.

Martin Sloan: Before Darktrace, we took a very traditional approach—the same as any other organization in the way it fights cyber warfare in that you’ve got several layers of firewalls. But there is an acceptance that no matter how good those defenses are, you’ll still be breached.

Instead, Darktrace’s technology focuses on preventing any breaches from doing harm. And just like your body’s immune system that fends off viruses, Darktrace is building a cyber immune system for the computers.

Poppy Gustafssion: The human immune system has, at its core, the innate sense of self. By knowing what is you, it can then identify what is other. Our bodies will then adapt and sort of mount a defense against that bacteria or virus, and write the code of that defense into our immunological memory.

Dave Palmer: The digital immune system is genuinely inspired by the human immune systems. Once we have smart systems that can learn what’s normal and spot the strange and the unusual, that’s great. We can tell human beings about attacks as they are emerging inside of their business.

Martin Sloan: I often describe Darktrace as life insurance. You have it not because you expect to be preached all the time. And when it does happen, you’re able to see that anomalous behavior. And when we do that, more often than not, that anomalous behavior can be explained.
马丁·斯隆: 我经常Darktrace描述为人寿保险。你拥有它并不是因为你希望你能一直得到庇佑。当它发生时,你就能察觉到异常的行为。当我们这样做的时候,通常情况下,反常的行为是一目了然的。

But when it isn’t, then we are able to deal with that incident immediately, take it off the network, find out where the problem was, fix it so that it doesn’t happen again. This technology is like a fever that alerts us when we have a virus, and then we need to take actions to treat it.
但当它不是异常行为的时候,我们就能立即处理这个事件,断开网络,找出问题所在,修复它,这样问题就不会再发生了。这项技术就像是生病发烧,当我们有病毒时就会提醒我们,然后我们需要采取行动来治疗它。

But Darktrace isn’t stopping at that. It wants the artificial intelligence not just to diagnose, but also, to start treating the computer virus even before the humans can intervene.

Dave Palmer: What’s really exciting, that’s been developed over the last year, is the ability to autonomously respond to attacks as soon as they happen, letting the machine judge what’s normal and unusual, and starting to interrupt and prod and poke and disrupt those signs of attack before they begin to have a major impact.
戴夫帕:令人兴奋的是,经过一年的研发,这个系统能够自发并且迅速地应对袭击,让机器判断什么是正常和异常,并在这些攻击开始产生重大影响前通过中断网络等一些手段阻止入侵。

AI doesn’t suddenly fix everything. I think it just takes us to the next phase of good guys versus bad guys.
人工智能不会一下子解决所有问题。我认为这只是把我们带到了好人对抗坏人的下一阶段。
