Africa, the world’s second-largest continent, a population of 1.2 billion people, and a huge and growing market for cell phones.

Sure, there are iPhones and Samsungs and Nokias. But in Africa, it’s really about Tecnos. They are made by a Chinese company called Transsion that ironically has never a single handset in China.
当然,非洲也有人用苹果、三星和诺基亚手机。但德卡诺(手机品牌)却占据了那里的市场。德卡诺手机是中国传音科技公司生产的,但具有讽刺意味的是,这家公司从不在中国出售手机。
So how exactly did it come to dominate the African market? By tailoring its phones to the people who live there. Local languages are on the keyboards.

The company says that its cameras adjust light to take better selfies of people with dark skin. And the phones have a long battery life. That’s important because of what’s called load shedding.

Countries like Nigeria, South Africa, and Ethiopia shut down the power for long stretches to prevent the whole grid from overloading. When you can’t charge your phone for hours at a time, having extra juice is a huge plus.

And maybe the biggest thing Tecnos have going for them—a budget-friendly price tag. Most the phones cost less than $200. Some are cheap as $15.

That’s a game changer in sub-Saharan Africa, where more than 40% of the population lives in poverty. By zeroing in on the specific needs of its customers, Transsion beats the competition.

It now sells nearly one of every three smartphones in Africa. So what’s next? Other developing markets. Transsion is targeting India, Russia, Indonesia, Bangladesh, all with the same strategy—think global, act local.
