Abstract: Wen 文 —literary and artistic achievement—is no less exalted than Wu 武(physical prowess)—in Jin Yong’s fiction. This wenwu composite ideal distinguishes his martial epics from their Western counterparts (Iliad, Odyssey, Lord of the Rings, Harry Potter, and the American Western). Although this dyadic emphasis harks back to Chinese heroic classics such as The Art of War  《孙子兵法》, Journey to the West《西游记》, Outlaws of the Marsh 《水浒传》, and Romance of the Three Kingdoms《三国演义》, Jin Yong’s fiction is unique in imbricating literary and martial arts, in juxtaposing heroic and romantic themes and, above all, in rendering this traditionally masculine ideal accessible to and attainable by women. This wenwu yinyang synergy accounts in large part for Jin Yong’s lasting appeal to readers — scholars notably included—of all genders and ages. Focusing primarily on Legends of the Condor Heroe《s  射雕英雄传》, I call attention to gallant heroes and feisty heroines who excel in the so-called “four friends / guardians of wenren / men of letters” — music, Chinese chess/go, calligraphy, and painting 琴棋书画. Shifting our attention from wu to wen, I contend, would also generate new criteria for writers, translators, and critics.

Keywords: Jin Yong, Wenwu, Chinese Heroic Tradition, Chinese music, chess, calligraphy, and painting 琴棋书画, gender, genre
